Keeping up with the Joneses: Electric cars close in on gas vehicle range

Electric cars close in on gas vehicle range

Recently, there has been a remarkable and promising development in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. In the beginning, electric cars were viewed as a futuristic novelty with a short driving range. Nevertheless, with advancements in technology, and the ever-increasing global interest in environmental sustainability, EVs are now becoming more mainstream. In fact, modern electric cars are gradually closing in on gasoline cars in terms of driving range.

Gasoline cars have long been the norm when it comes to personal transportation, with the most significant advantage being their long-range capability. For a long time, this has been regarded as one of the biggest advantages that internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles possess over electric vehicles. But today, the tide seems to be turning, with EVs fast catching up on gas vehicles.

The race to increase range in electric cars

The current line-up of electric cars has made enormous strides in driving range, with some models going above 400 miles on a single charge. This is a remarkable advancement in EV technology, leaving traditional gas-driven automobiles far behind in the dust. Moreover, this accomplishment guarantees that EV owners will have the peace of mind that they can get from point A to B without any hindrances.

However, many automakers are still pressing for more extensive driving ranges for EVs. Tesla, for instance, is working to develop a new battery cell that will allow its vehicles to drive autonomously for up to 621 miles. Additionally, with the introduction of the Lucid Air, an all-electric luxury sedan, Lucid Motors has identified a new milestone range of 500 miles, making it the first electric car that comes with a 500-mile driving range.

Considering how rapidly technology is evolving, it is evident that a range of 400 miles may soon become the standard for EVs. And although charging infrastructure remains a significant consideration for most EV owners, it is also progressing and becoming more accessible across the globe daily.
