Dr. Mary Daly, an oncologist and senior vice president of clinical genetics at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, stresses the importance of a healthy lifestyle as the foundation of cancer prevention. She says that while a healthy lifestyle does not guarantee that someone will not develop cancer, it can significantly reduce their risk of the disease.

One of the most important lifestyle changes that can lower the risk of cancer is maintaining a healthy weight. Obesity is a significant risk factor for several types of cancer, including breast, colon, and prostate cancer. Eating a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help maintain a healthy weight and protect against cancer.

In addition, regular exercise can also reduce the risk of cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise each week. Exercise can help lower the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colon, lung, and endometrial cancer.

Other Lifestyle Changes to Lower Cancer Risk

  • Protecting yourself from the sun: Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or indoor tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer. You can protect yourself by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
